Introducing The Implant Timeout
A very simple process supported with bold visual aides to help create a standardized practice for the orthopedic surgical suite. With more than 20 years of clinical experience, we've developed a way for surgical teams to insure all participants in the surgical suite understand and acknowledge the 4 S's of any planned procedure.

This trademarked process consists of three simple questions the surgical team (surgeon, tech and circulator) verbalizes prior to  opening sterile implants for an orthopedic procedure. Once implemented, this 10-second process can eliminate implant waste, or worse yet, a "sentinel event."

Wrong Site Surgery
A WSS occurrence has negative and traumatic effects on all parties involved (medical staff and patients alike), and potentially deadly effects to patients. Physicians partaking in WSS can incur penalties, and insurers may not pay institutions in the event of a WSS. Also, WSS can often result in malpractice claims and awards.

Why implement?
A study titled, Incidence and Cost of Intraoperative Waste of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty Implants (J. Arthroplasty; Zwiel, et al; May 2009) calculated the incidence and cost of mistakenly opened implants. A regional prospective assessment was performed which evaluated the reasons for component waste, the cost of the wasted implants, and where the cost was absorbed (hospital or manufacturer). Implant waste occurred in 79 (2%) of 3443 procedures with the surgeon and operating room staff bearing primary responsibility in 73% of occurrences. The annualized cost was $109,295.35, with 67% absorbed by hospitals. When extrapolated to include or reflect the whole of the United States, the annual cost to hospitals would be $36,019,000 and is estimated to rise to $112,033,000 by 2030, representing a potential target for educational programs and other cost containment measures.

Not Another Procedure. . .
When first introduced, the procedural timeout was considered rudimentary, or even silly, by many members of the clinical staff. Now it is the gold standard of avoiding "Wrong Site Surgery" (WSS). Today, 72% of WSS incidence are directly attributable to a defective "time out" procedure (AORN, May, 2013).

The Implant Timeout program motivates surgical suite attendees to participate in the process which will help avoid mistakenly   opened sterile implant, not to mention surgical errors.

Within two months, they're documenting a successful ITO 100% of the time. If this process has saved one mistakenly opened implant, it's already paid for itself!
